Doctrine and Covenants 14 – He speaks to us personally
When I studied Doctrine and Covenants in seminary, I thought it was so cool that Joseph Smith’s friends could ask for revelations. Life would be so much easier if the Lord would write down exactly what He wanted me to know.
Why couldn’t I be lucky like Joseph Smith, Sr.? When he was wondering how he could serve God, he got Doctrine and Covenants Section 4. When Martin Harris wanted a greater witness, he got Section 5. And when Oliver Cowdery had some doubts, he got Section 6. I figured that the only real downside was having your dirty laundry canonized into scripture.
Powerful Revelations Don’t Guarantee Faithfulness
It feels like life would be so much easier if we could get a clear, spoken response. But a careful study of the scriptures shows that this isn’t always the case. In fact, it is sometimes detrimental to our spiritual growth.
For example, when Laman and Lemuel were visited by an angel or when they were zapped by their brother Nephi, it did not produce lasting conversion. If anything, it made things harder because they were now accountable for a higher level of understanding.
Another great example is in Doctrine and Covenants Section 14. The Lord gave David Whitmer this revelation when David asked how he could help the Lord’s work. David is told about the “great and marvelous work” that is coming forth and how he is called to assist in that work. He is promised that if he endures to the end, he will receive eternal life.
David Whitmer went on to be one of the Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon and was the leader of the Church in Missouri. David made many sacrifices for the church, including giving up almost everything he had. But over time, he started to have disagreements and conflicts with other church leaders. He left the church and unlike the other two witnesses, he never returned. However, he fervently stood by his testimony of the Book of Mormon for the rest of his life.
Consistent Faithfulness Builds Lasting Relationships
In contrast, consider Elder Takashi Wada’s conversion story that he shared in the October 2024 General Conference. Elder Wada grew up in a traditional Japanese home where his father’s prayers to Shinto and Buddhist altars first sparked his belief in prayer.
As a teenager, he felt lost and uncertain about life’s purpose. But in junior high school, he received a copy of the New Testament to help him learn English. The words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28–30 deeply comforted him, and as he continued reading, he felt that Christ was speaking directly to him. He says, “His words filled my heart, even though I could not describe my feelings well at that time. Although Jesus Christ lived many centuries ago in a land unfamiliar to me, I thought I could trust His words with all my heart.”
A few years later, Elder Wada met the missionaries and a small group of believers. He says, “Despite it taking me a while to fully trust them, I came to see in the restored gospel what I yearned for when I studied the New Testament — the words of Jesus Christ and the hope and peace that come from them.”
The missionaries taught him to pray sincerely to Heavenly Father. Though Elder Wada initially expected a dramatic sign, he later realized that receiving answers required patience, faith, and a willingness to listen.
Elder Wada didn’t receive quick or dramatic answers, and he knew little about Christ at first. But through consistent effort, he learned to hear the Lord and built a deep, lasting relationship with Him.
How to Hear Christ
President Nelson urges us, “We are to seek, in every way we can, to hear Jesus Christ, who speaks to us through the power and ministering of the Holy Ghost.”
Visions and verbal instructions don’t guarantee that we’ll learn what the Lord wants us to learn or that we’ll endure faithfully to the end. If we wait for signs and wonders, we may overlook the many ways Christ is already speaking to us. Faithfulness isn’t measured by miracles—it’s defined by our relationship with Christ.
Elder Wada shared, “Praying to Heavenly Father helped me know who He is and my relationship with Him—that I was His beloved spirit son. I learned that because Heavenly Father knows and loves me, He would speak to me personally, uniquely, and in ways I would understand through the Holy Ghost.”

Since this month’s message is about turning to Christ, I thought that sunflower pens would be a nice fit. Sunflowers naturally turn toward the sun to receive the light they need to grow. Like the flowers, we don’t receive all the light we need in a sudden burst. Instead we grow as we learn to continuously turn towards the Son of God. Plus the little flowers look like they are bowing their heads to pray!
