Doctrine and Covenants 25 – Cleave Unto Your Covenants
A few years ago, we fostered two premature baby goats, Steve and Rio. Our good friends own a goat dairy, and these two were born to a first-time mother who didn’t know how to care for them. Without extra help, they wouldn’t have survived. Most baby goats are up and running within 30 minutes of being born. But premature goats can take at least a week before they are solid on their feet.
First, we had to teach them how to drink from a bottle. You’d think it would come naturally, but for days we had to pry their mouths open and force the nipple inside.
We quickly learned that we had to feed Rio first. If we tried to feed Steve first, Rio would shove his way in and send milk flying everywhere.
But even when Rio went first, it wasn’t much easier. He would go into a milk frenzy and lose all control. Rio could see the milk in the bottle, but he hadn’t yet realized it flowed through the nipple. He would attack the bottle from all angles in his desperation to get the milk. Even when we got the nipple in his mouth, he’d get so excited he’d forget to keep it there. He would cover himself and us with milk.
Draw Upon the Gift of God’s Power
In the scriptures, there is a good reason the Lord tells us to be like little children, not like “kids.” When we get frantic like Rio, we get so worked up that we forget how God’s power flows into our lives.
President Emily Belle Freeman reminded us in her October 2024 General Conference talk, “Live Up to Your Privileges,” that it is through covenant promises and priesthood ordinances that we access God’s power. She tells us to, “Learn how priesthood ordinances and covenant promises will allow God’s power to flow into your life with greater efficacy, working in and through you, empowering and equipping you to reach your full purpose and potential.”
If I am like Rio, I might sit through Sacrament meeting crazy with worry about a problem or mourning a missed blessing. I am renewing my covenants as I take the Sacrament, but I am distracted from the very purpose of those covenants.
Or I go to the temple looking for direction and forget to look for the blessings and strength the endowment promises me. Maybe I am so distracted by all my imperfections that I miss the covenant path the Lord has prepared for me to become like Him.
When we cling to the wrong things, we become distracted from the covenants that allow us to draw upon our Heavenly Father’s power. President Freeman says that our covenants allow us to “draw upon the gift of God’s power, including the ministering of angels and the Savior’s enabling strength to overcome.”
Covenant Connection
But how do we more effectively use our covenants to access God’s power in our lives? President Freeman points us to the example of Emma Smith in Doctrine and Covenants 25. This revelation was given to Emma in 1830 when she was only 26 years old. She had just lost her first baby, she had little to no financial security, and increasing persecution was threatening her family’s safety. She needed the Lord’s power in her life. The Lord councils her “Wherefore, lift up thy heart and rejoice, and cleave unto the covenants which thou hast made” (Doctrine and Covenants 25:13).
Emma was counseled to cleave to her covenants. Rather than despair, she should find hope and joy in her covenants. President Freeman says, “Through revelation, Emma would learn about the inward sanctification and covenant connection that would increase the ability of those priesthood ordinances to work in her life.”
Focusing on Our Covenants
Emma’s experience teaches us that covenants are meant to sustain and strengthen us, especially in times of difficulty. This same principle applied to the early Saints as they faced great hardship. The Lord commanded them to build temples in Kirtland and Nauvoo—even though He knew they would have to leave them. He knew they would need His power to endure what lay ahead.
As we partake of the Sacrament and visit the temple, we can lift up our hearts and rejoice as we cleave unto our covenants. It is through these covenants that we are reminded of our place in Heavenly Father’s plan, we renew our sense of purpose, and we strive toward greater sanctification. Through covenants, we become one with God. He is able to sanctify, change, and empower us.
When we are desperate for help, overwhelmed by trials, or unsure how to move forward, we can cleave to our covenants. Look forward to opportunities to renew those covenants and prayerfully allow them to change you.
As President Freeman shared, “We all have access to the gift of God’s power. Every time we partake of the sacrament. Every time we cross the threshold of a temple. This is the highlight of my Sabbath. This is why I cherish my temple recommend. ‘In the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest.’”
