Isaiah 58-66 – Rejoice in the Lord

One afternoon when I was in my teens, my mom excitedly hurried in the house and yelled for us to get in the truck. There was a breathtaking sunset, but the hill to our west partially blocked it. She wanted us to be able to see the full sunset. Without hesitating, we piled into the truck and drove a few minutes to a viewpoint on the other side of the hill. After parking, we all sat in the back of the truck to watch the sun go down.

It was a seminal moment for me and formed some key aspects of my identity. I was a member of a family who loved nature so much that they would drop everything to enjoy it. I belonged to a family who enjoyed things more when we were together. A family who not only shared their joy with each other, but a family who was ready and willing to receive that joy. A family who not only noticed nature, but who was in awe of it.

Seeds of Awe

Now that I am a mother, that moment has taken on deeper meaning and parallels. My mom helped plant a seed of awe. That seed has grown to not only encompass awe in God’s creations, but awe of the God who created them.

Like my mother, when I find joy, I seek for ways to share that joy with my family. When we talk of Christ with awe and enthusiasm, it gather others to the Son, our Savior. Those moments of awe will help shape my children’s identity. We will be a family who longs to be together to share the best things the Lord has to offer us. We are the family who gets excited about the gospel. And we are the family who shares that sense of awe.

Awe Prevents Spiritual Apathy

Elder Ulisses Soares talked about the importance of awe in his April 2022 General Conference talk, “In Awe of Christ and His Gospel.”  He shares, “When we truly are in awe of Jesus Christ and His gospel, we are happier, we have more enthusiasm for God’s work, and we recognize the Lord’s hand in all things. Additionally, our study of God’s words is more meaningful; our prayers, more intentional; our worship, more reverent; our service in God’s kingdom, more diligent. All these actions contribute to the Holy Spirit’s influence being more frequent in our lives. Thus, our testimony of the Savior and His gospel will be strengthened, we will keep Christ alive in us, and we will live our lives ‘rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, … abounding therein with thanksgiving.’ When we live in this way, we become more spiritually resilient and protected against falling into the trap of spiritual apathy.”

Awe Brings Joy

As we study Isaiah this month, we see this same awe and rejoicing in the Lord. For example, when Isaiah talks about his covenants with the Lord, he rejoices and is filled with joy.

“I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels” (Isaiah 61:10).

When I go to church on Sunday to renew my covenants, am I filled with that same joy? When I go to the temple do I rejoice? Or do I allow the hills in my life to block my full enjoyment of the gospel?  Like the sunset, when we are in awe, we put ourselves where we can see the light in its fullness.
